While this probably is not news to compliance officers, the results of a recent survey conducted by the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics and the Health Care Compliance Association indicate that their jobs are unusually stressful. (Please register at this link to view the survey.) According to the executive summary, “new regulations, adversarial relationships and difficulty with groups such as sales are causing sleepless nights for most and leading a clear majority to consider leaving their jobs.” Fifty-eight percent of respondents said that the stress wakes them up at night, and 60% said they considered leaving the job because of the stress. The greatest causes of stress were keeping up with ever-changing laws and regulations (24%) and preventing and remediating compliance and ethics violations (16% and 14% respectively). Not surprisingly, colleagues with whom they had the best relationships were those in the legal department and the worst were personnel in manufacturing and sales. Perhaps it’s time to recognize the importance and value of these folks to any organization, healthcare or otherwise, because they are working hard to prevent harm to organizations, employees, and individuals. What can an organization do to reduce stress on the compliance officer?
